Description of the series:

The City of Sigulda (had been named Segewold till 1917) is located in the historical and cultural region of Vidzeme, Latvia, 53 km northeastward of Riga (the capital of Latvia), in the most picturesque part of the primeval valley of the Gauja River. Because of this, Sigulda and its surroundings have a long time ago been called the "Switzerland of Vidzeme".
Sigulda started to develop as a small resort town (in the Governorate of Livonia, one of three Ostsee [Baltic] governorates of the Russian Empire) through the efforts of the Kropotkin princely family from the end of the XIX cent., when the well off began to acquire land parcels here. Then Sigulda rapidly turned into an extremely popular place of recreation. Beautiful sceneries, ancient castles, protected trails – all these were creating an ideal background for positive emotions and senses.
Since 1973, Sigulda has been a centre of the Gauja National Park, the first and the largest (917.45 sq km) national park of Latvia. Besides forests, rivers, rocks and caves, the Gauja National Park also includes over 500 cultural and historical monuments: castles, churches, estates, water and windmills, many objects of art and archaeology.
Long ago, Sigulda has also become world famous centre of winter sports. Here there are an excellent sledge-bobsleigh track, alpine skiing tracks and ski tracks.
In 1928, Sigulda got city rights. According to the statistics as of 01.06.2022, the population of Sigulda was 14,539 people and the population of Sigulda County (Latvian: Siguldas novads) was 18,228 people. (Since 01.07.2009, novads [Latvian] is an officially established unit of the administrative division of Latvia; since 01.07.2021, the administrative division of Latvia was reformed again.)
